Shopify Plus: when the plan is not the leak

People type “Shopify Plus” when someone wants the plan and the constraint is still unnamed. Checkout feels tight. Scripts are in a thread. An agency said Plus is the grown-up store. The number has not moved.

Shopify consultant: what the role actually owns already splits theme shop, media partner, and contribution owner. Ecommerce consultant vs agency vs fractional compares hire models by who owns the P&L. This page stays on the plan. What Plus changes commercially. When it does not. When the leak is still mix, the page, or the unit.

This is not a Plus implementation brochure.

Three columns under a Plus brief: checkout and scripts, B2B and volume, and contribution on the first SKU, with contribution marked as the one the plan cannot buy.

What Plus actually buys

Plus is a Shopify plan with a different checkout, a different script surface, and a different account shape. It can remove some platform friction. It can make a wholesale door, a B2B price list, or a high-volume launch less clumsy. It can give you a checkout you can change without an app pile.

It does not buy contribution. It does not buy a first product that can carry ads after returns. It does not buy a size story. It does not buy a creative that is incremental.

Fashion and beauty teams brief Plus for three honest reasons and one lazy one.

Checkout and scripts. You have a real launch or a real B2B flow that Advanced cannot hold. That is a platform call.

Volume and support. You are already at a scale where the plan’s support and limits matter. That is an operations call.

Wholesale and price lists. You need B2B on the same stack. That is a channel call. DTC vs wholesale is the sibling when the door is the question.

The lazy one. The number is wrong and Plus sounds like a decision. It is a purchase.

When the plan is not the leak

A conversion rate that sits at fashion-normal is not a Plus problem. What is a good ecommerce conversion rate is the judgment page for that tile. Mix versus PDP versus checkout is the split. Plus can change checkout. It cannot change the traffic you bought.

A ROAS tile that looks loud while contribution is thin is not a Plus problem. MER vs ROAS is the measurement sibling. The plan does not reconcile the dashboards.

A range that needs 30% off by week six is not a Plus problem. Ecommerce merchandising is the sibling when the markdown clock was a buy you already lost.

Paid on a first SKU that returns or never repeats is not a Plus problem. What is a good CAC, LTV:CAC, and payback? is the clock.

If those four are unnamed, a Plus migration will give you a new checkout and the same month.

Fashion launch versus beauty cadence

Fashion briefs Plus for a drop, a pre-order, or a wholesale door that Advanced cannot hold without an app pile. That can be real. A launch that needs checkout scripts, a password, and a clean B2B list is a platform constraint. Name it.

Beauty briefs Plus because the subscribe widget and the gift-with-purchase stack started to fight. That is often an offer problem wearing a plan label. Subscription ecommerce is the sibling when the cadence is the question. Plus will not pick the empty date for you.

A beauty kit that already fails contribution after the gift will fail on Plus with a nicer checkout. A fashion colourway that needs 30% off by week six will need the same cut after a migration.

If the honest sentence is “we want the account to look grown-up,” say that in the room. It is a brand choice. It is not a leak you can migrate away.

What a Plus brief should refuse

Refuse a brief that starts with the plan and works backwards to a reason. Write the friction first.

Refuse a brief that treats Plus as CRO. Checkout can change. Mix, PDP, and the first SKU cannot be purchased as a Shopify SKU.

Refuse a brief that treats Plus as a wholesale strategy. B2B on the same stack is a channel decision. DTC vs wholesale still has to reconstruct contribution after terms.

This is not an implementation brochure. There is no theme tour, no scripts catalogue, and no “you will need Plus when you hit X.” The commercial test is whether the current plan cannot hold a named job in the next two quarters.

How to brief the call

Write the outcome first. Then write the friction. Then ask whether Plus is the cheapest way to remove it.

A useful meeting test, said out loud:

  • What can we not do on the current plan that we must do in the next two quarters?
  • Is that a checkout, a B2B, or a volume problem?
  • If we stay on Advanced and fix mix, PDP, and the first SKU, does the month still require Plus?

If the third question is “we have not tried,” you are not ready to migrate. You are ready to name the leak.

A sequence you can run this week

You do not need a Plus sandbox for a first read. You need the constraint in writing.

  1. Write the job Advanced cannot hold. Checkout, B2B, or volume. If you cannot write it, stop.
  2. Pull last month’s contribution on the two first SKUs that took the most paid, after returns.
  3. Mark whether conversion is a mix story or a checkout story. Hold the traffic still.
  4. Price the migration against two quarters of fixing mix, the page, and those two SKUs.

If step one is blank and step two is thin, Plus is a purchase. It is not a plan.

If step one is a real B2B or launch constraint and step two is fine, the plan may be the cheapest way to remove the friction.

A Shopify Plus consultant can mean a migration engineer, a scripts person, or someone who will tell you the plan is the wrong brief. The title does not tell you which. Buy the outcome. Do not buy the badge.

TwoKai starts with the outcome. A store that can take the next order at a contribution you can defend. Then we engineer the route. Sometimes that route is Plus. Often it is not.

What's missing

This article can say what Plus changes and what it does not. It cannot tell you whether your constraint is the plan, the stack, or unit economics. That call lives on your checkout, your doors, and your first products.
